Shape of Things to Come New Sculpture

Published in conjunction with the opening of the new Saatchi Gallery in London in 1999, this mammoth book (over two inches thick) is a deep exploration of contemporary sculpture. The title itself refers to H.G. Wells' eponymous novel envisioning the future, and was a surprisingly accurate prophecy reflecting the author's own time. That book inspired Stanley Kubrick's film 2001: A Space Odyssey, in which a rectangular black monolith becomes an iconic yet enigmatic sculptural presence, and this book opens appropriately with a similarly monolithic sculpture: an enormous representation of a videocassette copy of 2001.
